1 I think one of the challenges of living in a shared house would be having to give up your personal space. Because you're not the only one living in your house. And also they may not like some of your rules, and you may get into few argues before finally dealing with the problem. Besides, you can't be sure that the person living with you won't for example accidentally wake you up in the middle of the night. So in a nutshell, you have to be prepared for anything.
2 The biggest advantage is, that paying bills would be two times cheaper, assuming you and your roommate have a job. So keeping up with paying them would be much cheaper. Also you wouldn't be alone with your house chores. For example you could clean the floor while your roommate is cleaning the dishes. Together you could get over things way faster and easier. On the other hand, the biggest disadvantage would be as previously said, that you have to be ready for unexpected things your roommate could do. Also you have to give up some of your privacy while respecting your friend's boundaries.
3 A good house-mate should be especially respectful. Because im sure you wouldn't want to live with someone that ignores your rules or disrespects them. They also should be caring and helpful, being there when you need them the most. And of course, they should see you as their friend they can count on. Not just as a person that they live with.
