I've just read your article referring to the out-mobile experiment. I had some thoughts after reading it.
I don't agree that my generation is mobile addicted and can't live without their gadgets. The overusage is rather dealing with more attractive and tempting stuff comparing to traditional activities. It is not because we can't survive without screens and social media but because it is more interesting. You can talk to your friend in person and describe a nice picture for hours. However, you can also talk to your friend and show them the picture on your smartphone. The aim is not describing the picture but sharing opinion of it. So in this case long description which must be inaccurate by definition is simply a waste of time.
The result of the experiment only prove it. Everybody survived and could live. The author boasts how successful they were making youngsters talking to each other. It was nothing special. Comparing to doing nothing, their conversations were simply more attractive so they chose talking. It is as simple as that, there is no great social dilemma.
