The Afghan girl
What's in a face? What does this face tell you? Is she tired, shy or sad? Can you tell a person's character from a photograph? She had one of the most famous faces in the world, but nobody knew who she was. in 1984, photographer Steve McCurry captured the striking photograph of a young girl from a refugee camp in Pakistan. Her serious, piercing eyes looking out at the world through the lens of the camera touched millions of people when the picture appeared on the front cover of National Geographic in June, 1985. McCurry didn't know anything about the girl, not even her name. He only knew that she was an orphan and escaped from Afghanistan during the war. He spent many years looking for her. His search was over when, at the beginning of the 21st century, he decided to make one last trip to try to find 'the Afghan girl". With a magazine team he travelled to Pakistan and showed the picture to the people left in the camp. Someone recognised the girl and put the team in contact with her brother. They managed to track her down to a small village.As he laid eyes on her for the second time, Steve remembered their first meeting. It was inside the school tent in the camp. He could feel how unconfident she was when he approached to ask if he could take her photo. Now we know that her name is Sharbat Gula and she is a middle-aged woman with a husband and three children. She lives a hard life in a village that has no school or clinic but is happy that the world knows that she and her people have continued to survive.
